Tama's Starclassic drums debuted in 1994 during an era where many drum companies were making thicker, heavier shells marketed to heavy rock and metal drummers. Starclassic Maple came out and broke the mold with ultra thin, rigid 9-ply 5mm North American maple shells with low mass lugs, die cast hoops and in-the-box suspension mounting. These features appealed to a wider range of drummers and now 28 years later Starclassic maple is still in the forefront of modern music thanks to their desirable sound, look and build quality.
Thought the recipe has slightly changed over the years (7-ply, 5mm toms), they've retained the focus, clarity and distinct Tama crispness that you'd expect. The ultra thin, rigid shells produce an extremely low fundamental tone that is accentuated by StarCast mounts and focused with die-cast hoops. It's a well balanced sound that sounds just as good acoustically as it does under the microphones.
One big takeaway we had after setting them up in our shop is the amount of projection these shells have. The kit sounds nearly the same whether you're behind it, out front, or even a distance away. Now imagine room mics and overheads easily picking up the fundamental notes from every drum in your kit and you can start to imagine how well these drums record. These drums will shine in pure acoustic situations without microphones to boot.
