This month two years ago, I became suddenly and mysteriously ill. On Monday, I welcomed my class back to school as class president; by Friday, I couldn't walk or speak. My brain was heavily inflamed, causing a variety of awful symptoms.
When I arrived in the emergency room, doctors already had a probable diagnosis in mind: autoimmune encephalitis. My immune system had a friendly-fire issue.
Brain on Fire, a book written by one of the first official diagnosed women with AE, brought this rare disease to the global spotlight, yet the best treatments are still unbelievably and inexcusably obscure in the medical community. This video is a small effort to promote proper understanding of the disease that left me hospitalized for more than 100 days. With the recommended healthcare, I would have only lost a weekend.
You can help me and the thousands of other patients battling AE by sharing this video!
