Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes the condition of volar ganglion cysts.
Ganglion Cyst of the wrist is probably the number one soft tussue wrist mass. A volar wrist ganglion typically appears on the palm side of the wrist.
Two types of ganglion:
•Volar 20%
•Dorsal 70%
The cyst is filled with gelatinous material. Ganglion cyst of the volar wrist is less common than a dorsal ganglion. The cyst arises from the radioulnar joint and close to the artery.
An MRI may be needed although ultrasound is better to identify the relationship between the artery and the ganglion.
Treatment may be either surgical or nonsurgical.
Nonsurgical:
•Aspiration if the ganglion cyst is big and causes the patient discomfort.
•Be aware of the relationship to the artery.
Surgical
•Excision if painful
•20% recurrence
•The ganglion may entangle the artery.
•Must do Allen test before surgery
