“Done is better than perfect.” -Sheryl Sandberg. I’ve come to realize that perfectionism is a recipe for misery. Yes, if you’ve been a perfectionist you’ve probably achieved some “success.” Notice the air quotes? I used them because even if you’ve achieved your success, if you have been trying to be perfect, you never feel good enough, this need to be perfect is draining you, and maybe the biggest of all, trying to be perfect is stopping you from reaching your fullest potential.
Your plan to reach your highest potential lies in striving for excellence, it lies in using ideas like these discussed in this video to let go of the need to be perfect and to start getting things done..
1. You Control the Chisel: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” -Eleanor Roosevelt. Application of this quote is one of the best ways to overcome perfectionism. You see, this need to be perfect largely stems from the judgement of others, to avoid pain. Maybe you are thinking like I did, “If I’m perfect, then I can’t be criticised,” “If I’m perfect, everyone will have to approve of me.” You know this isn’t the case, that even if you’re “perfect,” someone out there will criticise you for not being perfect enough. You need to embrace criticism to reach your highest potential, you do this by knowing you control your chisel!
2. Goals are Guides: You should never let what you do, what you have, or what you look like define you. It can be depressing when you identify with your goals and achievements, because you’ll likely never be satisfied, and if you aren’t achieving success as fast as you’d like, it can make you feel like a failure. That being said, goals are extremely beneficial when used the right way, as guides. Let goals guide you to excellence, not define your lack of perfection.
3. Embrace Your Mustard Stains: Here we discuss the pratfall effect in a new way. Many times you trying to be perfect to be liked and admired, but the strange thing is that when you are a perfectionist, it often backfires. You see, I’ve learned that people like people who are similar, not superior. If you struggle with perfectionism and you’re looking to overcome it, while at the same time trying to win friends, start embracing your “mustard stains,” and see what happens!
4. Drop the “All or Nothing” Mentality: I know I have used perfectionism as an excuse to not take action. What about you? What percentage is greater? 50% or 0%? Why would you choose 0% when this goal is important to you? Once it was presented this way, it seemed silly to put things off waiting for the perfect conditions. I’ve learned that it’s best to get started, to get it done, and this reinforces the quote we discussed earlier that done is better than perfect.
5. Work on a Weakness: This is the most amazing advice I can give if you truly struggle with perfectionism, if being a perfectionist is causing you misery. I was a shy guy and never talked, but during an internship, my boss made developing my communication and changing my mindset is prime focus. What a blessing this was! This is how you overcome being a perfectionist and get things done, by knowing that progress is better than perfection and seeking opportunities to improve in all areas of your life, as opposed to trying to be perfect in a select few areas and avoiding the other areas that you aren’t strong in.
