The Soviet-Afghan war involved many groups into the quagmire including Pakistan.
The war in Afghanistan started when USSR invaded Afghanistan in December 1979. The Soviet Union intervened in support of the Afghan communist government in its conflict with anticommunist Muslim guerrillas.
The Soviet union forged ties with the Afghan government and launched ruthless purges of all domestic opposition against the devoutly Muslims and anti-communist population.
Why did Pakistan involve in the Soviet-Afghan war?
Pakistan entered the Soviet-Afghan war because of several factors:
a) The Soviet Union was pushing to spread communism and reach warm waters. They began their adventure in Afghanistan. Pakistan feared that the Soviets might target them next once a stable pro-communist government was established in Afghanistan
b) Zia-Ul-Haq. the then President of Pakistan was looking to improve his relations with the USA. The Afghan war provided an opportunity to prove to the USA that Pakistan can be a reliable ally in the fight against communism in Asia.
c) The financial support provided by the USA and Saudi Arabia to Pakistan was very significant. This acted as another factor for them to enter the war.
