Many ornamental and edible plants display dark, necrotic looking spots on their leaves. This is a symptom of bacterial leaf spot disease. Bacterial leaf spot on plants will discolor, and in extreme cases, kill leaves. Tiny, microscopic single celled organisms are what causes bacterial leaf spot. There are several methods on how to treat bacterial leaf spot and save your plant’s glorious leaves. Early identification is crucial to effective management of bacterial leaf spot disease.
Bacterial leaf spot disease
The majority of leaf spot diseases are caused by fungi, but a few diseases are caused by bacteria.
In leaf spot disease small irregular spots or lesions of different colors appears on the leaf of many ornamental and edible plants.
Bacterial leaf spot diseases are most commonly caused by Pseudomonas spp. (Gram-negative).
Sign and Symptoms
Leaf spots come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors.
Leaf spot diseases usually are seen first on the lower and inner branches where humidity is higher
Spots occur randomly on the leaf surface because the pathogens that cause leaf spots are blown there by wind or by water.
Smaller leaf spots are younger infections. Larger leaf spots are older infections.
Some leaf spot pathogens cause leaves to drop prematurely, resulting in the tree or shrub losing most or all of its leaves.
Ideal Condition
Wet conditions promote the formation of these bacteria, which can spread on plants quickly.
Bacteria reproduce the fastest when temperatures is (25-30 C.).
Disease occurs mostly in cucurbits, bean and corns etc..
Prevention
Destroy fallen leaves
Do not overcrowd plants
Increase light penetration and improve air circulation.
Wet conditions promote disease, so water trees at the base and be careful not to splash water on leaves.
Use resistant varieties.
Crop rotation can be helpful.
Bacterial blight
The disease is characterized by small, pale green spots or streaks which soon appear water-soaked.
The lesions expand and then appear as dry dead spots. The lesions elongate into linear streaks which may eventually extend the full length of the leaf.
Bacterial blight disease is commonly caused by Xanthomonas spp. (Gram-negative). The plants mostly infected by blight disease include wheat, barley, oat and beans
