Imelda rails against candidacy ban.
Imelda Marcos, 65-year-old widow of deposed Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, on Wednesday (3/5) denounced her disqualification as a congressional candidate in the Philippines upcoming elections as "pure harassment." Mrs Marcos vowed to continue her candidacy as she appealed the decision before a higher body at the Electoral Commission. "I have always known that there are people out there to prevent me from seeking public office simply because I am Mrs Marcos," she told reporters. Imelda wants to run for Congress from her hometown province, Leyte, but has failed to meet residency requirements. Never one to avoid the limelight, on Tuesday she called her ban a "relentless
persecution". She said it was part of a campaign waged against her family since her husband was toppled in a popular uprising in 1986. Mrs Marcos and her son, Bongbong Marcos, who is also a candidate, have constantly defended their family's two-decade-long rule of the Philippines, dismissing as fiction thousands of well-documented cases of human rights abuses and charges of corruption and embezzlement. Neither Marcos candidate is offering voters an alternative platform to current government programmes. Both seem to be relying on lingering personality support from the Marcos era and whatever controversy-led publicity they can generate.
