A family run business, Clonakilla was started in 1971 and has been releasing world-class wines year on year. The blend originates from the Côte-Rotie in the northern Rhône, France and this Aussie version, the 2021 Clonakilla Wines from their Murrambateman vineyard is an excellent example. The 2021 vintage was cool with some rainfall, resulting in long hang time for the fruit. This wine is full of red fruits, florals and spicy perfume, with great length and structure from fine elegant tannins.
I find it interesting the discussion about the nomenclature Syrah vs Shiraz. As an industry, there is an adoption of the name Syrah for those wines that are produced from cooler regions and are on the more elegant side, whereas the name Shiraz in Australia is often associated with more bold versions from warmer sites. This seems to be ironic, when the wine of the day, being one of, if not the most iconic Australian cooler climate "Syrah" is called Shiraz...yet in 2006, Clonakilla released a straight "Shiraz" called "Syrah" and it comes from the same Shiraz vines as its sibling...food for thought and perhaps a good excuse for a visit!
