Candle Making Guide: When to Add Fragrance to Your Wax
Candle making is a rewarding craft that allows you to create beautiful, custom-scented candles for your home or as gifts. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced crafter, knowing when and how to add fragrance is key to making candles with an amazing scent throw.
When using paraffin wax or a pillar wax blend, the ideal time to add your fragrance oil is when the wax has cooled to about 65°C. This temperature range allows the wax to absorb the fragrance evenly, ensuring the scent is released slowly and steadily when the candle burns. Adding the fragrance at too high a temperature can cause it to evaporate quickly, reducing the overall strength of the scent in the finished candle.
To make your candles stand out:
1. Melt the wax using a double boiler until it reaches a temperature of 82°C.
2. Cool the wax to around 65°C before adding the fragrance.
3. Stir well to distribute the fragrance evenly.
4. Pour the wax into your moulds or containers once the fragrance is fully mixed.
By following these steps, you’ll ensure your candles have a long-lasting, strong scent throw.
Key Tips
- Choose fragrance oils made specifically for candle making to avoid burning or sooting issues.
- Always use a fragrance load recommended for your wax type—usually between 6% and 10%.
