(1 Jun 2017) The United States has fallen 11 places in the latest Global Peace Index (GPI) report.
The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), the think tank that produced the report, ranked the US 114 in the world for peacefulness.
Speaking in London on Thursday, Steve Killelea, the founder and chairman of the IEP, said the United States' drop is attributable to "an increase in the perception of criminality by Americans", a "slight uptick in the homicide rate" and an increase in the level of "internal conflict".
The report also found that more countries are dealing with historically high levels of terrorism.
The GPI 2017 showed the number of countries experiencing record number of deaths from terrorism rose to 23, including Denmark, Sweden, France and Turkey.
Killelea said that is primarily due to the spread of the Islamic State group and its affiliates.
The GPI ranks 163 independent states and territories according to their level of peacefulness.
