Scripture
Matthew 5:17-20 (ESV)
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. “
Icebreaker:
Talk about a time when you terribly misjudged a situation. i.e. you were sure your crush liked you back and you took your shot and got rejected!
Discussion Questions:
For the Israelites the Law was everything, it was how they connected to God and how they knew their standing before God, how hard do you think they tried to fulfill all 613(!) laws? How exhausting do think that was for them?
What does it mean for us today that Jesus fulfilled all the Law and the Prophets?
How does it make you feel to know that your salvation doesn’t depend on your ability to be perfect? Where does our hope of forgiveness and salvation come from?
Our desire to obey and honor God by the way we live our life should increase as we understand and live out the truth that Jesus has fulfilled all the requirements of righteousness we cannot fulfill. Is this true in your life today? If not why?
Challenge:
This week jot down a few ways you have seen growth in your life and obedience to God because of the truth that Jesus is enough and you don’t have to be.
