The Fokker D-21 fighter was designed in 1935 by Dutch aircraft manufacturer Fokker in response to requirements laid out by the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army Air Force.
The Fokker D-21 first flew on March 27th, 1936. The system was originally intended to fill the ranks of the Netherlands East Indies Army Air Service but the arrival of World War 2 eventually pressed it into service with Finland, Denmark and Netherlands air force units against Germany.
Interestingly, both Denmark and Spain also license-built the Fokker D-21. While Denmark produced just ten examples in addition to the three Fokker-built examples, the Spanish factory reportedly had fifty D-21s on the production line to supply the Spanish Republican Air Force.
