2. Water cannons being fired, riot police marching towards anti-government protesters
STORYLINE:
Police in Istanbul used water cannon on Saturday to disperse thousands of people who returned to the city's central square for a memorial to those killed in nearly three weeks of anti-government protests.
More than 10,000 converged at the square on Saturday, laying carnations and shouting anti-government slogans, in remembrance of three demonstrators and a police officer killed in the protests.
Police pushed back protesters with water cannon warnings for them to disperse were ignored.
The protests, that began May 31, had largely subsided this week after many protesters had espoused a more passive form of protest, with people standing motionless at Taksim and elsewhere across Turkey.
