The Hardy Boys first appeared on tv in 1956: 'The Mystery of the Applegate Treasure' was a serial that ran a chapter a day on the original 'Mickey Mouse Club'. The opening song was performed by Thor Ravenscroft, a singer with a deep, d-e-e-p voice. William Lava wrote the music. The 'gold dubloons and pieces of eight' song is one many of us never forgot.

Shaun Cassidy and Parker Stevenson were the Hardy Boys updated for the 1970s. For the first season they alternated with Nancy Drew; Nancy took a back seat in the second season with only a handful of episodes but several guest shots with the Hardys. In the third and final season the boys are hired as agents for the Department of Justice (it is fiction after all). The Glen Larson theme fit the premise although the hokey, jazzed up season three version was as ill-considered as the Hardys' new job description. All three seasons are represented here.

In the 90s 13 episodes of an even more updated version of the Hardys appeared. Colin Gray and Paul Popowich starred in the half-hour series co-produced by companies in the US, France, and Canada. Music is attributed to 'Pure West' but it's not surprising that somebody didn't want their real name associated with it. I did like that the Hardys' license plate read 'Bayport: Land of Mystery'.

BONUS: When the 90s Hardy Boys show was produced, so was a companion half hour with a miscast Tracy Ryan as Nancy Drew. Her theme is better than what the multi-national behemoth gave the Hardys, though that's not saying much. Be that as it may, it's your BONUS!

7:30 End credits.
Enjoy this trip down Hardy Boys memory lane.
