Today's vlog covers one of the backyard permaculture design principles- Obtain a Yield.
This principle is pretty easy to grasp but it's worth diving a little deeper into what kinds of yields you can have in your garden and why this principle is important to follow.
Yields come in many different forms. Physical yields include eggs, meat, and manure from chickens, fruits and veggies from your garden, bulk organic material for mulch or compost, etc. These are the easiest to see and understand but are definitely not the only kinds of yields.
Another type of yield is beauty and enjoyment! Planting flowers simply to have flowers to harvest as a yield can brighten rooms and bring a smile to anyone having a bad day. Flowers also bring an additional yield of pollinators and predatory insects to your garden, which in turn help protect your crops against pests and provide pollination services to ensure a bountiful harvest.
Knowledge is perhaps one of the best yields that comes from this backyard permaculture design principle. Spending time in the garden and learning what works and what doesn't on your specific property can make the difference between a productive garden and one that falls flat. Failures are okay as long as you obtain a yield of knowledge from your actions!
Perhaps one of the more important yields are seeds! Seed saving is a science that can be learned by anyone. Using open-pollinated/heirloom varieties will allow you to harvest seeds from your garden to continue food production into the future. Over time, selecting seeds from your best performing plant within a crop type will continue to adapt that seed to your land and climate. Having seeds selected for your property will allow larger yields over time as the plant is adapted to your specific growing conditions.
