My SLF or Scud Like Fly is a suggestive pattern intended to represent a swimming scud. Its scruffy, buggy look also appeals to a trout's natural predatory nature. Suggestive flies such as my SLF are excellent flies to try early and late in the day, early spring and late fall, and any time there is little to no hatch to focus the trout's attention. I also like to use suggestive patterns when prospecting a new lake or perhaps a familiar lake to get a measure of what the trout might be feeding upon through the careful use of a throat pump. Scuds are a key stillwater food source and trout seldom pass up on the chance to eat one or flies that suggest them.
A choppy hand twist or 2-3 inch erratic strip pause retrieve coupled with a hover, clear intermediate, or type III full sinking lines is my preferred presentation method.
