If you’ve had your thyroid removed you can still live a healthy life. I want to say that everything I talk about isn’t meant to substitute for your medical care. Please check with your doctor before taking this advice, which is meant for you to have more research for you and your medical doctor.

Over the years I’ve had quite a few people who’ve had their thyroid removed (thyroidectomy) come into my office And they were fine. Out of all the things that could happen to you; of all the organs to have removed, having no thyroid plus being on the right hormone protocol can support you to live a healthy life.

The thyroid is controlled by a small structure in the brain called the hypothalamus. It makes thyroid releasing hormone, which signals the pituitary gland to release thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). This in turn prompts the thyroid to release T4 and a little bit of T3. T4 is the inactive thyroid hormone. T3 is the active thyroid hormone version.

T4 is converted to T3 by processes mainly in the liver and kidneys. T3 then goes into all the cells. Once it’s done its job, the pituitary and hypothalamus get a signal to turn off producing more hormones.

When you have your thyroid removed, there are three points I want to emphasize. One is that you still have what are called parathyroid glands adjacent to your thyroid. They should not be removed along with your thyroid; they should be left in because they control calcium and other important functions.

The second point is something called calcitonin, another hormone released by the thyroid and which slows down bone degeneration. If you’re put on synthroid, it doesn’t contain calcitonin. Thus your risk of osteoporosis increases, as does your risk of something called spinal stenosis.

To get calcitonin you’ll need to take a complete thyroid complex called armour thyroid. Be sure to check with your doctor. A lot of them don’t like to use it because it's hard to regulate. But at least ask, along with asking where you’re getting your calcitonin from. You want to make sure you are healthy with your thyroid removed; you just need to ensure you get this one important hormone.
