(12 Jul 2015) OPENING OF THE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF CARTHAGE
Hundreds of people came to the Roman theatre of Carthage for the launch of the 51th edition of the International Festival of Carthage.
Every year in July-August, the UNESCO World Heritage Site welcomes the international festival of music where numerous Arab and International artists perform.
The Algerian singer Warda, the Tunisian composer Anouar Brahem, or the Lebanese artists Marcel Khalifa and Nancy Ajram are among those who will perform.
The opening performance was a tribute to the Tunisian diva Beya Bent Bchir Ben Hdi Rahal, known as "Oulaya".
Born in 1936, the singer started her career with The Rachidia, the famous musical association of Tunis.
Saturday's performance by Director Abdellaziz Meherzi recounts Oulaya's life until her early death in 1990, through a mix between music, theater and dance.
"I'm here today for the opening of the Carthage festival for Oulaya of course. She a Diva and also my aunt, so I'm really happy to be here, like every year since I often go to the Carthage festival," shared Wafa Hasni, a niece of Oulaya.
"I didn't know her but now that I do, I really liked her music and I think it's good for our generation to learn about older music, so it really was a good experience for me," explained Salsabil Chamam.
"My father used to love her, because she lived in Egypt for 12 years and she was a very good singer there, and the Egyptians like her, until now!," said Oussama Khouli.
The ancient ruins of Carthage will welcome artists Lauryn Hill and Akon before the festival ends on August 18.
