The Belgica Expedition (1897–1899) was the first scientific expedition organized and funded by the Belgian government in Antarctica, with the support of several Belgian institutions.
With a doctorate in science obtained at the Sorbonne, the Romanian Emil Racoviță, who was only 30 years old at the time, received one of the most important missions in this expedition, that of a biologist. Enormous difficulties, the loss of some crew members, entrapment in the ice of the extreme South, isolation and uncertainty, but also close friendships, discoveries and the thrill of pioneering, all these marked this legendary expedition. After two years of wandering and explorations, Belgica returned triumphantly to Europe. The Romanian scientist was overwhelmed with honors and became deputy director of the Arago Oceanographic Laboratory. He also became co-director of the periodical "Archives de Zoologie expérimentale et générale", the most prestigious journal in Europe, which he had founded in 1872. Gradually, Emil Racoviță will give up the study of oceanography and dedicate himself to a new science - biospeleology - which he officially founded in 1907. Back in Cluj, he founded the first Institute of Speleology in the world, and the results are exceptional: 1,200 caves explored in Europe and Africa, a collection including 50,000 cave animals, 66 published treaties on underground fauna, recorded in 6,000 pages.
The film made by ICR Brussels aims to highlight the role that Romanian science has played throughout history in conjunction with the Belgian scientific field, to celebrate the success of the Belgica expedition and the 100th anniversary of the world's first speleological institute - the Institute "Emil Racoviță” in Cluj-Napoca.
We are pleased to invite you to watch this film and we thank Mr. Cristian Lascu - scientist, journalist, photographer - for accepting the invitation of RCI Brussels to describe, in a short documentary, the bright personality of the Romanian scientist Emil Racoviță as well as his own adventure as an explorer and speleologist, during the expedition organized in 2012 aboard the ship Plancius, on the footsteps of the legendary Belgica.
