Do you want to format your PC? You have a bootable disk but don’t have a CD-ROM? Use a bootable flash drive.
What is a bootable flash drive?
A bootable flash drive or bootable USB. Is a device use to run ISO image/s inside of it. Usually a bootable flash drive is used to format a PC/Laptop or to run a live OS on a USB.
Advantages of using a bootable flash drive:
• Fast – unlike bootable disk that takes time to read, a bootable flash drive is faster since the ISO image is loading via USB.
• Universal – you can use your bootable flash drive on any platform. Whether you are using a PC or laptop as long as it has a USB port on it and can support boot on usb/removal device.
• Cheap – you can put different ISO images on one flash drive instead of buying multiple CDs.
How to make a bootable flash drive?
To make a bootable flash drive here are the things you need:
• 4GB or more flash drive
Note: Use an authentic flash drive. There are some cases that a bootable flash drive is not working properly because the USB is fake. I will make a tutorial to test if your flash drive is fake or not. Be sure to check that out.
• ISO image (Windows, Linux, Mac, Android, etc.)
• A Windows PC
• Rufus
Now lets start. On this tutorial, I will use a Windows 7 AIO ISO image. You can find different ISOs of Operating Systems on the internet.
1. Open a PC,it should be Windows. 32bit or 64bit it doesn’t matter.
2. Plug in your flash drive.
3. Download and run Rufus.exe
4.
Make sure that yours is like this
• DEVICE – Choose the flash drive that you want to make bootable
• PARTITION SCHEME AND TARGET SYSTEM TYPE – set to “MBR partition scheme for BIOS or UEFI”
• FILE SYSTEM – NTFS
• CLSUTER SIZE – 40964 bytes (Default)
• NEW VOLUME LABEL – *Don’t type anything
• CHECK DEVICE FOR BAD BLOCKS – Uncheck
• QUICK FORMAT – Uncheck
• CREATE A BOOTABLE DISK USING – “ISO Image” Check
• CREATE EXTENDED LABEL AND ICON FILES – Check
5. After that, click the icon near the “Create a bootable disk using” and choose your ISO image.
6. Notice that when you added an ISO image to Rufus some of the settings will change. Its fine, don’t freak out just ignore it. Usually that happens when you add a Linux or other ISO image aside from Windows to Rufus. The important thing is you chose the correct flash drive and added the ISO image to Rufus successfully.
7. Click “Start” to start creating your bootable USB.
Once finish, set your BIOS to boot in USB and plug in your bootable flash drive. You can now format your PC/laptop.
You can load different kinds of OS in Rufus. Linux, OSx, Antivirus, etc. your choice.
