Saint Manikkavāsagar is the author of Thiruvāsagam of which Śivapurānam is the first part. The famous saying: "He whose heart is not melted by Thiruvāsagam cannot be melted by any vāsagam (saying)" reminds us of the highly devotional nature of this crucial work.
This sacred chant is said to be a very potent way to reach Mahādev and is also said to have been written by Nandi Himself; a pure Tamil hymn to Lord Śiva was desired and this great hymn is the result.
It is the only divine hymn that begins with "Namah Śivāya" which is at the center of the vedic pillar and powerhouse, Śrī Rudram.
The script is provided in English for students, along with a translation.
Audio features Śrī Chaitanyananda Nātha Saraswati (Haran Aiya) of the Śrī Rājarājeshwari Peeṭam and others (along with a very familiar and fond voice to those who used to attend the temple around this time :) at the Rush (Rochester) temple.
This recording (edited slightly) comes from early 2012 during the conclusion of the weekly Kalasam Puja.
