Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo 7 has been updated on PS5 with 120 Hz and VRR support, paving the way for new resolution and frame rate options. Here are the details.
With the addition of 120 Hz and VRR support on PS5, Gran Turismo 7 now offers a total of 4 Performance modes that mainly vary in terms of resolution and frame rate. Outside of resolution and average frame rate, the modes share the same graphical settings, with the exception of grass draw distance, which is slightly lower in Frame Rate mode.
In terms of image quality, the Resolution mode at 120 Hz with VRR set to On offers the highest possible resolution, running at a native 4K (2160p). With VRR turned Off, the Resolution mode at 120 Hz drops the resolution down to 1440p. Meanwhile, the Frame Rate mode at 120 Hz with VRR set to On also runs at a native 1440p. With VRR turned Off, the Frame Rate mode at 120 Hz drops the resolution down to 1260p.
With regards to performance, the Resolution mode at 120 Hz with VRR set to On runs between 70-120FPS, mostly hovering in the 80 to 90 fps range during races. With VRR turned Off, the Resolution mode runs at 120 fps for a majority of the time, though the frame rate is not entirely stable and there are drops here and there. Meanwhile, the Frame Rate mode at 120 Hz with VRR set to On also runs at 120 fps for a majority of the time, with dips in frame rate here and there. With VRR turned Off, the Frame Rate mode at 120 Hz runs at essentially a locked 120 fps, delivering the best possible performance.
GT7 was developed by Polyphony Digital and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The game is the eighth chapter in the mainline Gran Turismo series. It was revealed during the PlayStation 5 reveal event on June 11, 2020, and was released on March 4, 2022 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, making it the series’ first multi-console entry.
