"It's really important to meet with a registered dietitian once you've been diagnosed with food allergies or food intolerances to ensure that you are really confident in knowing those foods and ingredients that need to be avoided and what foods we can use to replace those foods that were missing suddenly. In children, it's going to be essential to monitor their growth. Are they sticking with their growth curve? Are they gaining weight? Are they increasing in height over time? And for adults it can be really important also. An adult who is suddenly restricting more foods then they've ever restricted in the past may lose weight, and more weight than we really want to see them losing. Some of the benefits of meeting with a registered dietitian after being diagnosed with food allergies is that these recommendations are really specific to you. This is not a one-size-fits-all. You are a unique individual and you deserve specific nutrition specifications that are distinctive to you and your diagnosis. Somebody might come in with one or two food allergies but another person might come in with 12. You can see that that can really vary, so an RDN is really there to guide you, to keep you on track with your different goals. You have to remember that different ages and stages are going to require really distinctive recommendations. If we have a toddler coming in, versus a breastfeeding mom versus, a teenager that's really active in sports, those recommendations are going to vary for all three of those different categories."
