How did breakdancing, a 1970s and '80s street dance created by Black and Latino kids in the Bronx, explode into a global phenomenon and win a spot at the 2024 Summer Olympics? And what does it mean for a subculture to go mainstream? In this documentary, B-boys and B-girls grapple with the changing nature of "breaking."

Norman "Normski" Scott was a member of the pioneering Rock Steady Crew in New York in the early 80s. His unique style earned him appearances in the movie Flashdance and on TV commercials. Today, he is a history teacher at a high school for at-risk students. As breaking goes to the Olympics, Scott fears the impoverished and violence-plagued neighborhoods that invented it are being left behind.
Antonio "Tazk" Castillo became obsessed with breakdancing as a kid after immigrating to the U.S. from Mexico in 1990. But he grew frustrated by the lack of opportunity for breakers, so he opened a breakdancing school; launched a competitive league; and wrote a rulebook for battles. Castillo hopes the Olympics will finally give breaking the respect it deserves.
Kateryna "B-Girl Kate" Pavlenko started breakdancing in 2009 as a teenager in Kharkiv, a city she describes as the "capital of hip hop in Ukraine." With her hometown now ravaged by Russian bombs, Pavlenko is proud to have a chance to represent Ukraine at the 2024 Olympic Games.
Victor "Kid Glyde" Alicea is the son of legendary breaker, Glyde, of the original Dynamic Rockers in New York. He is now leading the next generation. Alicea worries about the erasure of the dance's origins as it becomes commercialized and globalized. But he is also thrilled to see this New York-born art-turned-sport embraced all over the world.
