🛠 Trepanation: the practice of drilling a hole in your head. 🛠 Ever wonder about trepaning and how it's done? Perhaps why someone would drill a hole in their head? Or how one might go about performing self-trepanation? In this episode of Inkademic, we look at all of the above and trepanation throughout history and the arts. We go all the way back to prehistoric Peru, travel to 16th century Europe, and end up in the modern day. This sort of extreme body modification has been practiced for more than twelve thousand years and was surprisingly non-lethal (at least, in certain places and at certain times). We hope you enjoy this deep dive into the single oldest surgical procedure known!
Please remember that trepanation can be extremely dangerous and we are absolutely not suggesting you do it. This video is for education and entertainment purposes only.
Note: the original "Heartbeat in the Brain" documentary was found and screened in 2011.
