The guard on an angle grinder is a vital piece of kit to keep you safe while cutting and grinding, not only protecting you from sparks, but also from a burst wheel, should it crack and break.
The guard you use on your machine is determined by what job you're doing; cutting or grinding. For grinding, machines are now manufactured, according to European law, with 'burst proof' guards which can not move more than 90° from their original position should the disc burst, providing protection from injury.
If you're using the angle grinder for cutting, you'll need to change to an enclosed guard. The enclosed guard is used to protect you from sparks and bursting discs, the same as the grinding guard, but with almost 180° enclosure, it directs all the debris away from your body and immediate area. These guards can be purchased from industrial retail and hardware shops and simply attach to the angle grinder to provide additional safety.
