Global Dialogues. A film in English with English subtitles. Two views on sexual diversity collide in this groundbreaking film based on ideas written by young Africans. On questions of tolerance vs. condemnation, understanding vs. prejudice, and love vs. hatred, where do YOU stand? This film was produced by Global Dialogues (www.globaldialogues.org).
CONCEPT NOTES:
Many decades ago, women who brazenly demanded the right to vote were vilified. They won.
In the latter half of the 20th century, in the United States and South Africa, for example, people of color fought for equal rights. They were often demonized. Many died. They scored monumental victories.
Since the early years of the AIDS epidemic, people living with the virus have made great strides (in some places more than others) in overcoming the initial stigmatization, discrimination, and even violence to which they were subjected.
For many -- hopefully almost all of us -- each of the following assertions ring as shameful statements from our backward past: "No right to participate because you're female." "Less than a man because you're black." "Not worthy of respect because of a virus in your blood."
Humanity's fights for decency and dignity aren't finished.
In today's sub-Saharan Africa (and not only...), a great many people shun and even hate fellow human beings simply because they happen to be attracted to people of the same sex. Members of the sexual diversity in Africa and their allies now stand where leaders of the woman-suffrage movement, the civil-rights and anti-Apartheid struggles, and the initial, compassionate AIDS-response community once stood.
