In this video, May Berenbaum explains how a brown moth helps control a pervasive roadside weed, and how the study of sick caterpillars has resulted in contributions to medical science.
May Berenbaum is the head of the Department of Entomology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and received the National Medal of Science in 2014. Her research looks at the interactions between insects and hostplants and their chemical mechanisms, including chemical and genetic analyses. (She also has a character named after her on the TV show, The X-Files!!)
