This video demonstrates a discovery made by scientists at St Vincent's Institute of Medical Researcher in Melbourne Australia.
A drug similar to baricitinib was introduced into a cell culture setting with insulin-producing cells and immune cells. Without the treatment, the immune cells attack and kill the insulin-producing cells. When the drug is included, the immune cells are disabled and are unable to kill the insulin-producing cells.
Baricitinib is currently used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and is now being used in a Phase 2 Clinical Trial. The BANDIT trial is open to people aged 10-30 years old who have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in the last 100 days.
