Rahova is a neighbourhood in southwest Bucharest, Romania, located in sector 5, west of the Dambovita river.
The name of the neighbourhood comes from the victory achieved at Rahova, a port city on the Danube in Bulgaria, by the Romanian armies on November 9, 1877.
The most important streets are Calea 13 Septembrie and Calea Rahovei.
Calea Rahovei was known in the past as Podul Calicilor or Drumul Florareselor, the main access road to Alexandria.
The name “podul” (bridge) came from the wooden boards with which it was paved, this being a cheaper material than stone.
“Calic” was the term used to describe a disabled person - it was a metaphor for the poor disabled people who populated the area.
Podul Calicilor was surrounded by beggars and needy people but the authorities chased them away and renamed the street Calea Craiovei (in 1860) to remove the bad reputation. So the neighbourhood became the property of the richest people of that period, changing its name and inhabitants.
Merchants who owned property on Calea Rahovei set up shops, while residential areas often have houses with gardens. During the reign of King Carol I, several significant enterprises appeared for the industrialization of Romania, such as the Match and Stamp Factory, the Bragadiru Beer Factory, the Millet Shoe Factory, the Great Communal Warehouses, or the Vulcan - Machine Factory.
Until the 80s, in Rahova you could only find small houses, specific to the suburbs of the capital. Later, the area began to develop in the industrial segment, with several companies operating here, but also from a residential point of view, with the construction of the Civic Center and the People's House.
At the present time, Rahova is a neighbourhood of contrasts, extending over a large area and including both poorer parts, which are not always seen favourably by Bucharest residents, as well as beautiful and quite expensive areas, such as the one located near Sebastian Park.
