Introduction:
Two developments on May 1: First, it was 75th anniversary of Pakistan Russia relations. Second, in leaked documents from Pentagon, it was mentioned that Pakistan’s PM was advised by his subordinate in February 2023 that Pakistan should not vote in favor of western backed UN resolution that conemns Russia’s Ukraine War as it will jeopardise Pakistan’s Trade and economic interests with Russia.
Today, we shall explain the trajectory of Pakistan’s relations with Russia.
Beginning:
Pakistan established diplomatic relations with USSR on May 1, 1948. Despite initial warmth, our relations turned sour soon after Pakistan’s tilt towards US led western bloc. Multiple other factors led to deteriorating bilateral relations reaching to their lowest in 1980s.
Post Cold War:
No major improvement as they lacked strategic alignment. Post 9/11 these relations changed for various factors.
Reason for recent warmth:
There are multiple factors that are shaping this shift in these two states’ policies:
-Pakistan’s long list of grievances against the west
-Russia’s growing global isolation
-Bilateral Economic Interests
-China Factor
