MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) Crews are busy preparing for repairs to the General W.K. Wilson Jr. Bridge, more commonly known as the Dolly Parton Bridge.
When Local 15 crews drove out to the location during rush hour Monday evening, traffic was flowing smoothly. But on Friday, get ready for a big change.
That's when the northbound bridge will be closed and remain closed through mid-July. All drivers traveling north will be forced to cross over into the southbound lanes, meaning there will be one lane of traffic in each direction.
ALDOT crews haven't said what time on Friday the switch will begin.
But work and repairs to northbound lanes will start first thing Saturday morning.
Leading up to Friday, crews will focus their work on the southbound lanes, installing concrete barrier walls. During this time only one lane on the southbound bridge will be open.
"We'd ask that they obey the reduced speed limit which has been lowered to 45 miles per hour. Our workers are installing the barrier rail right in the center of the bridge, very close to oncoming traffic," said ALDOT engineer Matt Ericksen.
