Changdeokgung, also known as Changdeok Palace, is one of the Five Grand Palaces built during the Joseon Dynasty in Seoul, South Korea.
Changdeokgung is located in Jongno-gu, Seoul, and it is situated east of Gyeongbokgung Palace. The palace complex is surrounded by lush gardens and is part of the larger Changdeokgung Palace Complex, which includes Huwon (Secret Garden).
Changdeokgung was originally constructed in 1405 during the early years of the Joseon Dynasty by King Taejong. The palace served as the main royal palace for many years, and it was the preferred residence of many Joseon kings. Over the centuries, the palace underwent several renovations and expansions, reflecting various architectural styles of the time.
Daejojeon (The Queen's Residence): This is the main living quarters for the queen and features beautiful architectural details, including colorful wooden panels and delicate carvings.
Injeongjeon (The Main Hall): This is the throne hall where the king conducted state affairs and met foreign envoys. Injeongjeon is characterized by its elegant wooden architecture and a large, elevated throne platform.
Seonjeongjeon (Council Hall): This building was used for official state meetings and is distinguished by its simplicity and straightforward design.
Huwon (Secret Garden): The palace complex includes a large garden, Huwon, which is often considered one of the most beautiful palace gardens in Korea. It features a serene pond, pavilions, and various walking paths.
Changdeokgung, along with Huwon, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its outstanding architectural design that harmonizes with the natural environment. The palace complex represents the Confucian principles that influenced the Joseon Dynasty and the integration of traditional Korean architectural styles.
