Ruth Coppinger TD is a name that would have been unfamiliar to many of those at Dublin's inaugural #TransPride march. She has been a been a prominent figure in local and national government circles for many years, championing feminist and working class issues.
She endeared herself to the audience at the Custom House when roundly condemning Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist (TERFs). She called for the removal of the Catholic Church from any involvement in (state funded) schools and health services.
Ruth raised an important issue, often overlooked by the mainstream LGBTQ community, namely the rights of people with autism and other disabilities, in relation to access to healthcare.
She brought a strident anti capitalist message to the event blaming the free enterprise system for being the root cause of much of the discrimination that befalls the Trans community. She castigated Dublin LGBTQ Pride for getting into bed with Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon and similar multinationals and called on Pride to disassociate from them and return to its radical roots.
