Cartoonists have never shied away from dealing with the most delicate social and political issues of the day, and the coronavirus pandemic has been no different. Caroline Rutz and Carlo Schneider have taken on the crisis with biting wit—especially where they’ve seen political wrongdoing—but also with empathy and humor. Their work, which has been published in Swiss magazines such as Nebelspalter and Le Matin Dimanche, will be part of the exhibition “Gezeichnet 2020” at Bern’s Museum of Communication later this year. In this interview, they discuss their process and how they approached the pandemic. “I think it’s our role as cartoonists,” said Lutz, “to take every topic—even if it’s serious, even if it’s dramatic—and to turn them sarcastic or ironic or do something funny with that.”
