(28 Jun 2020) Scuffles erupted on Sunday during a demonstration against Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro in Rio de Janeiro.
Dozens of riot police were deployed to keep watch on the protesters who had gathered by the city's iconic Copacabana Beach.
When one woman was taken into custody and a man was spoken to by police for using a speaker at the demonstration, the protesters continued to demonstrate peacefully.
Soon after, riot police were seen spraying tear gas at protesters and were filmed hitting Micaela Nascimento, a 33-year-old Black transgender woman who was shouting and demanding the release of the demonstrators.
Later, the group marched towards the police unit where the two people in custody were later released.
Anti-Bolsonaro demonstrations were also held in other cities across the nation, including the capital Brasilia.
