Saz Semaisi in the Nihavend makam (modal melody type) is a composition by the classical Turkish composer Mesut Cemil (also spelled in Romanized Arabic as “Massoud Jameel” or “Mas’ud Jamil”), son of Ottoman composer Tanburi Cemil Bey. The Saz Semaisi work contains 4 hane stanzas and a teslim refrain. The first three hane and the teslim of a typical piece in the genre maintain the rhythm of having 10 beats to the eighth note per measure. With the fourth hane, the rhythm usually changes to 6 quarter note beats. In Mesut Cemil’s Nihavend Saz Semaisi, the fourth hane has the irregular meter of seven eighth-note beats.
