Despite their reputation for egomaniacs, German Wehrmacht soldiers had a deep respect for some of their enemies. For example, they viewed Soviet soldiers as bestial and ruthless, and they were terrified that they were willing to give their lives for their motherland. On the other hand, they saw the British as excellent warriors, disciplined and trained. But in lesser esteem they had the North Americans, whom they called "the pigs".
