Like many of his generation Herbert “Bill” Sisk never talked about his war experience when he returned home. It wouldn't be until the 40th anniversary of D-Day, watching President Reagan on TV speaking in Normandy, that Sisk began telling his daughter about his war experience.

On June 6th, 1944, Sisk was aboard an LST heading for Utah Beach. He was a member 90th Infantry Division, 915 Artillery Battalion, T.O. – Tough Hombres, in Patton's Third Army. Sisk would be wounded in the leg on Hill 122 in Normandy and sent to England to recover.

Upon his return the 90th was gearing up to assist in the Battle of the Bulge. It was during this time the 90th discovered the Merkers Salt Mines and Bill had an opportunity to see where Hitler hid his treasures of gold and art.

Shortly after the 90th helped liberate Flossenburg Concentration camp. The memories of the camp remained with Bill all his life.

Herbert "Bill" Sisk passed away peacefully on August 10, 2021
