Ry said this about fretting behind the slide: "I'll whip it off maybe once or twice, for effect in a spot. But if I'm just playing, I want to play. Otherwise you have to sit and woodshed that stuff and figure it out, it's not as physical as just playing the thing. I can have it worked out to where it's comfortable. You've got to be comfortable or you won't sound good. If you're trying too hard, it sounds like you're trying too hard. It gets nervous - like jazz." (Guitar Player, March 1988). OK, OK, back to the woodshed.
Here is my transcription of the intro and solo from a live performance of the Johnny Cash tune, played by Ry Cooder, shown on the TV program "Wired", and available on YouTube. You can see Ry fret behind the slide in the solo where it corresponds to 00:39 in my video. The drums here are Apple Loops and the organ is playing MIDI from a tab part I wrote out in TablEdit. This is the Teisco pickup.
