On 21 December 2023, the New Zealand Government announced it would follow through on its National/NZ First coalition commitment to protect female-only sport, by withholding public funding from sport bodies that don’t provide safe and fair competition for women.

While many celebrated the return to common sense, the NZ media portrayed the policy as “hardline”, “separatist” and “exclusionary”, platforming the views of trans-identified male cyclist Kate Weatherly (formerly Anton) denouncing the policy.

Not one media outlet interviewed a single female athlete.

So I sat down with 4x Kiwi Olympian running legend Lorraine Moller MBE to get her perspective.
