The 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale needs to be a success, because the future of the famed Italian brand is riding on it. The all-new small SUV enters a segment Alfa Romeo hasn't played in before and, therefore, should deliver incremental sales, of which it desperately needs, particularly in Australia.

Needless to say, expectations are high for the Tonale, and it'd better exceed them if it's to have any chance of truly challenging the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Audi Q3, among others.

So, in this expert review, CarsGuide Deputy Editor James Cleary delivers his first impressions of the Tonale on Australian roads, where it hopefully flexes its Alfa Romeo genes to good effect. Fingers crossed.
