Dor Ben-Amotz is a professor of physical chemistry at Purdue University. His recent experimental and theoretical interests include hydration-shell spectroscopy, liquid theory, hyperspectral imaging, and new ways of teaching physical chemistry. In this Perspective, some important open questions remain regarding the dependence of hydrophobic interactions on molecular size and temperature, as well as the balance of direct and water-mediated interactions.
