Rutgers University in New Jersey was the first to announce it, but now many colleges and universities say they will require students to have COVID-19 vaccines entering the fall semester. Vaccine mandates aren't new. Nearly all colleges require at least one vaccine for enrollment. What happens if a student doesn't get the vaccine will vary by school. Some plan to hold registration and not allow that student to enroll in classes. Others might bar that student from living in campus housing. By now, kids aged 16 and older can get the vaccine in any state, but legal challenges to these mandates are still likely. Particularly the nature of these vaccines being authorized by the FDA under an emergency use authorization could be a stumbling block. But the American Council on Education believes the legal right of these institutions to require COVID-19 vaccines will be upheld as their availability increases.
