Hi. I’m Paige Pradko. I am a therapist who specializes in treating people with anxiety disorders, health anxiety, OCD and agoraphobia. Welcome to Therapy for a Better Life.
I was reading Dr. Harry Barry’s book on Anxiety and Panic and learned some information that I hadn’t come across before about what happens in our body during panic or high anxiety versus when we are under chronic, daily stress from life.
I think that most of us can relate to that feeling of chronic stress.
Let’s face it, life can be stressful whether you are trying to get your course work done, or you have deadlines at work or relationship issues and family responsibilities or you just have too many things on your plate and you feel exhausted.
Our sympathetic nervous system, our fight, flight or freeze response is activated when we feel panicked, anxious, or even stressed.
Our stress response sets off a hormonal response that is activated by the hypothalamus in the brain and our pituitary gland. When this is activated, hormones are sent into the bloodstream and travel to two glands situated over the kidneys, our adrenal glands. Our adrenal glands then release what we call stress hormones.
Now this is where it gets interesting. Our brain decides, based on how it is interpreting our physical and emotional state, what combination of stress hormones and how much of each of these stress hormones to release into our blood stream.
I am sure you have heard of Adrenaline or Epinephrine. This is the predominate hormone released during a panic attack or high anxiety. It is released in large amounts when we encounter a sudden stressful situation, where our brain interprets that we might need to flee or run away. (The old tiger is behind that bush over there response.)
The symptoms we experience from an adrenaline rush include a pounding heart, difficulty breathing, stomach or digestion discomfort or nausea, shaking, sweating, dry mouth, throat closing in or a lump in our throat, weakness or dizziness, tingling sensations and feelings of fear and dread.
Another stress hormone, noradrenaline or norepinephrine is released when we encounter a stressful situation, and we respond to it with anger and our impulse is to stay and fight.
And the third stress hormone, glycol cortisol is the real culprit for many of us. The stress hormone gluco cortisol is released in large amounts when we encounter a stressful situation that looks like we it might be going to last much longer.
Your brain recognizes that you are dealing with daily, chronic stress and it releases cortisol into your blood stream to provide you with energy to deal with this stress.
However, high levels of cortisol in our blood stream causes symptoms like fatigue, poor concentration, feeling constantly wired and on edge, sleep difficulties, metabolic syndrome and it makes your body more susceptible to infections and illness. High levels of cortisol are also associated with a chronic state of inflammation in the body. I think of the phrase, wired and tired when I think of cortisol.
And next week, I will cover part 2, a really important video for your health where I describe 8 proven ways to lower your cortisol levels caused by chronic stress.
