STORYLINE
Hundreds of Italians took to the streets of Rome, Naples and Venice on Wednesday as part of anti-austerity protests that have erupted across Europe.
The event was organised by the CGIL (The Italian General Confederation of Labour), Italy's largest labour union.
Union Representative, Ulisse Mazzoli, said that the 25 (b) billion euro (30 (b) billion US dollar) cuts hurt the most vulnerable.
"We are here to protest because we have seen that the initiative taken by the European government to solve this crisis is not sufficient and is unjust, especially in Italy because as always they target the workers, the poor, the pensioners and do not hit those who have more," he said, speaking from the rally in Rome.
Factory worker, Crecenzo, said more should be done to help the younger generation.
"I don't know what should be done but the politicians, these people are lazy, they should study a solution to help people's lives, lives of young people especially," he said.
Another protester, Dino, was also critical of politicians saying that political parties were "all useless now".
Strikes or protests were also taking place in Greece, Portugal, Ireland, Slovenia and Lithuania, all aimed at the budget-slashing, tax-hiking, pension-cutting austerity plans that European governments have implemented to try to control their debt.
Several governments, already living dangerously with high debt, were pushed to the brink of financial collapse and have been forced to impose punishing cuts in wages, pensions and employment.
The measures have brought workers out across Europe by the tens of thousands over the past months.
