Here are my top 5 reasons why the American Express Platinum Card is actually easier to get than you may think:
1. Marketing & Appearance
It’s marketed as a luxury / lifestyle credit card with a sleek design & metal construction, but that doesn’t mean it’s only for affluent people. It’s also not an ‘invitation only’ card (as is the case for the Amex Centurion Card / Amex Black Card).
2. It’s a Charge Card
Unlike a traditional credit card, Amex charge cards don’t have a preset spending limit. This seems to result in easier underwriting standards and therefore easier approvals compared to other premium ‘credit cards.’
3. It’s More Like a Coupon Book Than an Elite Membership
The Amex Platinum Card has credits to keep track of monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, and annually. Here are the major ones:
- $300 Equinox credit
- $200 Hotel credit
- $240 Digital Entertainment credit
- $179 CLEAR credit
- $200 Airline Fee credit
- $200 Uber Cash credit
- $100 Saks credit
- $100 Global Entry / TSA Precheck credit
- Note that each of these have terms & conditions and they’re issued at different intervals throughout the year.
4. You Don’t Need to Work Your Way Up to It
Even though Amex doesn’t have any true beginner credit cards (like secured credit cards, student credit cards, or credit building or rebuilding cards), some people think that you need to start with the credit cards with no annual fee and gradually work your way up. For example, you could start with the Amex EveryDay Card or Amex Blue Cash Everyday Card. From there you could then get the Amex EveryDay Preferred Card or the Amex Blue Cash Preferred Card. Then you could go get the Amex Green Card, followed by the Amex Gold, and finally the Amex Platinum. However, none of that is necessary. As long as you have a decent score, decent history, and decent income compared to your expenses, then your chances of getting an approval for an American Express card will likely be quite good. In fact, the Amex Platinum Card could be your first Amex card…ever :D
5. You Don’t Need An 800 Score. You Don’t Need to Make $100K+ per year.
People have gotten approved with a 670 score / $40K income. Your debt-to-income ratio is likely more important with American Express (that is, how much debt you have reported on your credit report vs. how much you make per year). High balances on credit cards and large outstanding loans or other debts will likely work against your chances of approval.
