Traffic jams plagued Taiwan's freeways at the start of the Tomb Sweeping Day holiday. Some drivers think that carpool restrictions should be in place for the end of the holiday period, when heavy traffic is expected again. But the National Freeway Bureau says it's taking other steps to avoid jams. Besides letting people drive on road shoulders on the last day of the holiday, during the long weekend it has suspended toll collection from midnight to 7 am. But on one of Taiwan's most notorious roads for traffic, the freeway between Yilan and Taipei, the bureau and local governments are considering whether carpool restrictions might be used in the future.
