Kapuscinski Development Lecture with H.E. José Ramos-Horta, former President of the Republic of Timor-Leste and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.
Amid progress toward global peace and poverty reduction, we also see massive failures. The goals of building peace and eradicating poverty require us to address the root causes of conflict and to support sustainable development hand in hand with others. However, we are facing major threats - conflicts that have caused the displacement of millions of people, the growing gap between ultra-poor and super-wealthy, and the recent trend toward nationalist thinking that weakens multilateralism, which provided the foundation for peacebuilding for many decades. How can we ensure the global community agrees on common goals and faces its collective responsibilities?
H.E. José Ramos-Horta is former President of the Republic of Timor-Leste and a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. He is a Member of the Council of State of the Advisory Body to the President of the Republic of Timor-Leste and a Member of the UN Secretary-General High Level Board on Mediation. He also serves as Commissioner in the Global Commission on Drug Policy in Geneva.
Moderated by Inge Kaul, with words of welcome by Henrik Enderlein and Richard Kühnel.
