Introducing the insaneintherainmusic Big Band! I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to present a big band concert of my arrangements on March 1st at the Berklee Performance Center alongside the 8-Bit Big Band! This was the last gig that I played before the shutdowns, and man, what a fun gig it was. I arranged 5 tunes from Sinnoh for big band, and the show was so much fun! A lot of the time, my preferred style of jazz leans toward the fusion style of things, but it was nice to go back to good ol’ swing, and even a bit of rock and roll in this particular arrangement. Unfortunately, because of the shutdown, we never got to record everyone together in the studio, which really sucked! However, after seeing some other people do these virtual big band things, I decided to round up some players with home recording setups and put this together myself! Turned out super well!
For most people, Oreburgh City isn’t necessarily the first place you think of when you think of the Sinnoh region, but I found it super cool! It’s one of the first places that you encounter in the game that plays with the new 3D perspective that the DS Pokémon games provided by using the conveyor belts coming out from Oreburgh Mine! That was a nice small touch! I thought a rock n’ roll big band kinda vibe fit the atmosphere of Oreburgh City super well, I was sort of imagining the miners swinging their pickaxes to the beat of the song and having a grand old time!
Mixing a remote recording like this certainly presented some new challenges! I helped a few people in the band get their mic setups in order, and we had a couple of issues with recording quality here and there, but it otherwise turned out pretty well! One of the trickiest things was getting the band to sound tight in editing, and I used Vocalign for that! Normally, when playing together in person, everybody in the big band would listen to the articulation of the lead trumpet player to decide how long or short notes should be. Unfortunately, we couldn’t really do that with the remote recording the way we did it, so I use Vocalign to get people’s articulations to match up, and it worked super super well! Vocalign essentially lets you select a “guide” take and match the articulations / timings of other “dub” takes to it. I would usually select a lead player, have Vocalign learn that as the guide, and then apply the timing shifts to the other tracks to make them match the lead player! I would only do this about 2 bars at a time just to make sure everything lined up well, so it was a bit tedious, but WOW was it worth it! I’d highly recommend people check this out if you’re doing any sort of remote recording stuff where ensemble tightness is of great importance... it’s good stuff!
